You may be a caregiver for an aged parent, your special-needs child or adult, or working as a caregiver for an organization. Regardless of your situation, I encourage you to embrace hope. Embracing hope could include your desire to see improvement in the person you are caring for, as well as your willingness to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 5:3-5 sums up what it means to have hope. We should “glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” God gives you strength, courage, and peace to endure your sufferings, and builds your character, as you relate to your loved ones and others, with dignity. God loves that person just as He loves you. As a caregiver, God has assigned you with this awesome task of representing Him, as you converse or show kindness and love to your loved ones or those in your care. Character leads to hope and is perpetuated by God’s love.
I have been caring for my daughter, Emily, for many years and looked to God only for her healing, not realizing that God was teaching and molding me through my sufferings. I prayed with, and for her, and would cry out to God, while embracing hope, and found over time, that having hope enabled me to go through my struggles with ease. My focus has now turned to: learning to interact with her more, teaching her about the Lord, and relating to her as a mother and as an agent of the Lord, God. The Holy Spirit, working through me, has enabled me to do the utmost for her. Understanding that I can do all things in Christ, I have embraced my daughter with love and continue to look to God from whom all blessings and help come.
