As special needs parents, we ask the question: “How will God provide for my special-needs son or daughter? As you and I enter our senior years, or even if you are not a senior, the above question is relevant. Some of us are especially thankful to God for our older adult children who are well established, but what about our children who are unable to fend for themselves? Ask yourself these questions: What does God want me to do? What is my next step? There are four areas that I think would help you and which you need to research, and they are as follows:
- Be a part of a support group with parents whose children have similar diagnosis as yours, so you can obtain the support you need.
- It is essential to have someone else be a co-guardian in case of incidental death. If you have an older son/daughter or friend who can stand in the gap, you should contact your lawyer to begin to put that in place.
- You can also hire a special needs lawyer to open a special needs trust for your child/adult and decide who the fiscal person will be.
- Depending on your son or daughter’s situation, decide who will care for him/her or the housing situation you will establish for him/her. You are the parent, and only you know what is best for your son/daughter.
I wish you success in your research and may God continue to give you strength, peace, and hope.
