Patience with our special needs children reflects walking in the ways of the Lord. We know that God is righteous and just (Psalm 11:7), He is loving and compassionate (Psalm 145:8),faithful and true (Psalm 145:13, he is holy (1 Peter 1:16), and when we submit to God, he will guide us and direct our paths. When we follow the ways of the Lord, we will have patience in dealing with our special needs, children, and adults.
Patience is essential in dealing with our special needs, children, and adults because of three main reasons:
- Reflecting God’s Character: By being patient with our special needs children, we embody the very nature of God. We show them the same grace, love, and faithfulness that God shows us, helping them feel valued and understood.
- Fostering Growth: Patience gives our children the space and time they need to learn, grow, and develop at their own pace. It ensures that we are meeting them where they are, rather than rushing them to meet our expectations.
- Building Trust and Security: Patience builds trust. When we are patient, our children learn that they can rely on us, which fosters a deep sense of security. This trust is foundational to their emotional and spiritual well-being.
In summary, patience with our special needs children and adults is not just a practical virtue; it is a spiritual practice that aligns us with the ways of the Lord. It allows us to love and care for our children as God loves and cares for us, creating an environment where they can flourish in the fullness of God’s grace.
