How to Interact with Your Special Needs Son or Daughter

Interacting with your special needs son or daughter may at times  be difficult depending on your son/daughter’s disability and your form of interaction. I find that my daughter’s morning routine, during the pandemic, which includes getting dressed and being seated at the table for breakfast, taking a morning walk, or engaging in some activity, is the most challenging. There is no scheduled  transportation or program that she attends, so I must create one.

Despite the challenges, interacting with your son/daughter can be fun. The first step is to find what your son or daughter enjoys. Does he/she like to listen to programs, or does he/she enjoy doing activities? If your son or daughter likes listening to programs, decide on what he/she likes to listen to, and what device you will use.

  • Listening:

They could listen to bible stories, painting or coloring instruction, English sentence construction, conversational English, and other programs on various YouTube Channels, which would help to build his/her self-esteem.

  • Doing activities:

They can glue pictures, images, or leaves into a scrap book; they can view dance or stretch exercise classes on YouTube channels. Stretching or dancing helps to improve self-esteem.  I have not done this yet, but I am thinking of  creating simple science projects. We are also in the process of coordinating a volunteer dancer for Emily.

  • Interacting on social media:

I am not suggesting that you interact on social media since I do not know your situation. I try everything to keep Emily and myself busy. Emily is now on Instagram. When I have time, I take pictures of her and I post them to my Facebook stories or to her Instagram account to improve her self-esteem.

I  will love for you to comment on this post and tell us the ways that your special needs adult sons and daughters respond to learning. Even if you do not have a special needs son or daughter, you may be an educator with skills that parents, like myself, can use. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks to those who have already supported us through their suggestions and financial support. I am deeply grateful.

May God bless you and your family.
