Living in a fast-paced environment such as America has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is that there are opportunities for one to position oneself very quickly. However, I have found that disabled individuals do not have the opportunities as much as those who are able.
As a parent of a disabled adult, I find it difficult climbing the stairs to get our daughter positioned where she can reach her intellectual level. I have noticed a pattern where caretakers are sending their special needs adults to group homes. While group homes and day programs help our special need adults, especially those who cannot help themselves and assure a place for them when we die, I am not sure that the system allows programs to align themselves with businesses to create part-time positions for those who are able to work so that those individuals can reach their highest potential.
Another way that special needs individuals can reach their highest potential is through individual learning and sharing. If you know special needs adults who are interested in joining a group for learning purposes, or you have skills to teach special needs adults, please let me know. Together, we can start home- schooling on the weekend for our adults. Let me know if this is a great idea; I look forward to hearing from you.
