Why Outdoor Activities are Beneficial to Our Special Needs Children/Adults

Years ago, I took my daughter for walks in nearby parks. Those days were challenging because she did not want to get in the car when we were finished with our walk. I would have to ask a stranger for help and that person would tell her to get into the car and she listened. This worked for me then, but I do not suggest you do so in the world we live in today. We reverted to taking her for walks a few blocks from our home so we would not have to deal with a car issue and sometimes, I have had to call my husband who drove to where we were standing, and we would have to wait a few minutes for her to get in the car. I also faced another challenge when I took her to a particular restaurant which had outdoor seating. Being among people was so lovely; people were enjoying themselves, chatting, and laughing and my daughter was uncomfortable. We asked the waitress to wrap the meals and we left.

I believe that a variety of outdoor activities such as visits to her Godmother’s home, walks in nearby parks, eating in small restaurants, and accompanying me to takeout restaurants after our walks would help in restoring my daughter’s confidence and self-esteem. Research has found that walking not only boosts self-esteem, but decreases stress, increases social interaction, has positive effects on persons with depression, and avoids negative thoughts on persons with mental illness (https://www.news-medical.net/health/Does-Walking-Aid-Mental-Health-Problems.aspx). Moms, be encouraged, for even with the use of a wheelchair, you can take your son/daughter for a walk.

May God bless you,
